TomTom GO 940 LIVE - Connectivity is the key...

Date 28th August 2008

TomTom GO 940 LIVEWell, there were plenty of rumours and much speculation prior to today's Press Conference. TomTom even treated us to a sneak peak of the specifications on their web-site until someone spotted the error and hurriedly pulled the page but the x40 range has now been officially launched at IFA in Berlin.

At a Press Conference this afternoon TomTom unveiled the new 540, 740 and 940 connected devices. These utilise a GPRS data connection to provide access to dynamic routing information which takes into account current road conditions. Each one uses TomTom's HD Traffic service as well as a new, updated IQ-Routes. Perhaps the most useful addition is the Google 'Local Search' feature - search Google via the Satnav and navigate straight to the supplied address. Voice Control has also been updated with over 100 tasks now voice-activated. All the x40 devices also come with a new 'active mount' which is sure to please many prospective owners!

The devices will cost from £299 and are expected to become available in Autumn 2008. Each device comes with a free 3 month trial of the LIVE services after which a subscription will cost €9.95 per month and can be cancelled with one months notice.

More information with some pictures here and many more images, creosotes and photos of the actual devices from our reporters at IFA in Berlin can be found in the comments thread linked at the foot of this page...

TomTom sets new standard for navigation industry

New dynamic route guidance fundamentally improves in-car navigation; if there is a faster route, the new TomTom GO x40 LIVE will find it ~

IFA - Berlin, 28 August 2008 – TomTom, the world’s leading navigation solutions provider, today presents its most innovative product yet. The connected TomTom GO x40 LIVE delivers dynamic navigation and route guidance that continuously adapts to changing road conditions and always gives drivers the fastest route to a destination.

The three models of the TomTom GO x40 LIVE series (TomTom GO 940 LIVE, TomTom GO 740 LIVE and TomTom GO 540 LIVE) come with a new and extended version of TomTom’s unique IQ Routes™ technology. TomTom IQ Routes™ is now based on historical travel time information for every road, specified for every day of the week, at five minute intervals.

The TomTom GO x40 LIVE automatically connects to TomTom’s exclusive High Definition (HD) Traffic service for the most accurate and detailed live traffic information. It will now be available in the UK, Germany, France and Switzerland for the first time, in addition to the Netherlands, where the service was introduced at the end of 2007. If the measured traffic conditions differ from the expected traffic flow, the TomTom GO x40 LIVE will automatically calculate a better, alternative route, if one is available. The expected time of arrival will be adjusted accordingly.

Launch of TomTom LIVE Services

The TomTom GO x40 LIVE series has plug & play connectivity built in, and comes with a number of valuable information services for motorists.

• TomTom High Definition Traffic™ service for the most accurate and current traffic information en route, now available for the first time in the UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, as well as in the Netherlands.

• TomTom Safety Alerts including real-time safety camera reporting and sharing, meaning users can keep each other informed about mobile safety cameras. Safety alerts in the UK will be supplied by Road Angel.

• TomTom Fuel Prices: up-to-date fuel price information guides users to the cheapest fuel stations along their routes or in their area.

• TomTom unlocks the power of online Local Search with Google. It turns search results into a destination with the press of a button. This gives users access to millions of locations.

“The introduction of the new TomTom GO x40 LIVE series and LIVE Services marks a fundamental breakthrough in the quality and functionality of navigation devices, and how people will use them,” says Harold Goddijn, TomTom’s chief executive officer. “We don’t want our customers to spend time in traffic if they don’t have to. With the new TomTom GO x40 LIVE, we provide drivers with the best routing information available, and we help them to make intelligent decisions that save time and money, putting them back in control.”

“Through the introduction of TomTom LIVE Services we are also evolving from a pure PND manufacturer to a provider of state-of-the-art routing information,” Goddijn adds. “We believe that through those innovations, we can enhance the lives of millions.”

TomTom GO x40 LIVE range
The new TomTom GO x40 LIVE series features three models; the TomTom GO 940 LIVE, TomTom GO 740 LIVE and TomTom GO 540 LIVE*. Each comes with an iconic flat design and a new, high-quality user interface with optimised icons for even easier navigation through the device menu.

All products come with TomTom’s wide range of award-winning navigation features, including IQ Routes, HD Traffic as part of LIVE Services and TomTom Map Share - TomTom’s unique map improvement technology. The improved advanced lane guidance feature now gives drivers clear instructions at complex junctions.

The new Active Dock incorporates a system connector, so the device can be semi-integrated into the car, while ensuring easy docking and charging.

With safety in mind, the TomTom GO LIVE series now also features voice command and control in addition to existing safety options, providing customers with more safety features than any other navigation device. For the first time, users can plan a route or make a phone call just using their voice. More than 100 tasks can be activated by voice, so drivers can keep their eyes focused on the road ahead.

The TomTom GO x40 LIVE series comes with a full range of accessories to match the design and finish of the new range.

Points of note from the Press Event are:

  • The range will be launched in the United Kingdom, France and Germany this year.
  • IQ Routes on the x40 range will operate 24/7 rather than opting between weekday/weekend.
  • LIVE Services will include HD Traffic, Buddies, Google Local Search and a Fuel Price search (no Fuel search in Germany at launch).
  • New active mount simplifying connection.
  • New day/night colour schemes
  • Improved Voice Command. We tried this today and even using our very poor German it was able to understand us!

One disappointment is that the data service is for a single country only and will not function when roaming. This is a more a sign of the stranglehold on data charges that the mobile phone operators have but a shame nonetheless.

Also surprising is the lack of any facility to remotely disable a device if reported stolen. With the 2-way data exchange now available it should be a simple matter to facilitate the remote locking of a device if reported stolen by it's (verified) owner?

Regardless, connected devices are the next obvious step and the access to Google search, HD Traffic, Fuel Pricing etc is a great step forward. It is to be hoped that the live content available will now expand rapidly as these connected devices become more commonplace.

Do any of them still navigate?
Do any of them work with phone hands free yet?
(Or shall we have to wait for the x80?)
If so, can I win one in the next competition?

If it tastes good - it's fattening.

Ah yes, I didn't spot that. TomTom did mention that they were looking to source data from other providers in future some time ago but they added that we weren't a big enough brand.

Their choice of course but I think our data stands up well against Road Angel's and we are 100% transparent with our service, RA are not.

Is it safe to assume that the subscription for HD Traffic will also be £9.95/month?

Or are HD Traffic and Live being treated as separate products?
